How do you feel when you are running out of time? You know you have to do something but confused. We all go through this phase before travelling. Especially someone like me who sucks at planning and organizing. Oh boy! travelling is not everyone's cup of tea. I still can't believe sometimes that how a guy like me travelled 2 countries and survived all by himself.
Where are you gonna stay? The answer to this question is of utmost importance as a wrong decision can turn your whole experience into a disaster. I applied for leaves a month before my travel date but I was still struggling with the visa process (Click here to know about the Russian visa process). I had to make an important decision "Where am I gonna stay?". I knew nothing about Moscow. Confirmed hotel booking is a must requirement for getting the visa. With little research, not only I got a good deal but also got a free travel voucher which usually costs around 20 USD.
I am sharing my experience so that you guys don't have to go through this phase. The place I booked was Jedi Hostel in Moscow. It's in the downtown of Moscow. I stumbled upon a pic on the internet which was a hostel with cube structured beds. It seems its a new concept in tourism and hospitality industry. Very cost effective and great utilization of space I must say.
I booked Jedi Hostel from Booking.com for 7 nights. It cost me around a total of Rs 7000. To be honest you can get a place to stay for as less as Rs 300 and even better one but are you willing to take a risk? I too booked a place for 200 per night but I thought I cannot compromise with my place of stay, the place where I don't have to worry about my luggage, the place where I can sleep comfortably and above all cannot compromise with experience.
Roman from Ukraine (Co-traveller) |
It's an urban theme co-ed hostel. A small property yet a vibrant and colourful one. I could never make out the staff from the guests as they were so young and casual and felt like they were co-travellers. They used to eat with us, chill with us and joke around with us. There was no separate room for boys and girls. if you want a separate room you can get a private room with some extra charges. The whole time I kept my luggage out in the open with others as I felt it was safe.
Although bed capsules were quite spacious and comfortable, shower rooms were small. You can do your laundry in washing machine. There was a kitchen where you can cook whatever you want and Refrigerator to keep your food. Few of the basics like tea, coffee etc were on the house, rest you can bring your stuff and cook it. What I liked about this place was the staff, cleanliness and above all its location.
View from my room |
As you can see the view from my window, It stands right in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The famous Arbat Street (centre of attraction for art and music lovers) is a 2-minute walk from the hostel. Nearest metro is Smolenskaya which is also a 2-minute walk away. There is a Supermarket right across the street. Moscow river is also a 5-minute walk from there. The most popular Kremlin and Red Square is 2 metro station away. Isn't it great! I literally covered all these places by just walking.
Mary and Alex |
I made a few good friends too there. Alex from Peru, Anna, Mary was a staff and there were others too. Alex and I had a very good time there. We went to places, had beers and shared about our lives and the places we came from. I noticed some of them were staying there from months. What's unique about this place was that there were no formalities. If you behave like a customer, they will treat you like one. If you approach like a friend, you will see a different side of theirs.
You must be thinking why I am selling them to you. I wish it was true but it's not. I am not getting paid for this. I am sharing my experience only as a concerned traveller and my contribution to the travel community. I really had a good time in Moscow and a lot of it came from and was possible because of the Jedi Hostel. It would always be my first choice, whenever I visit Moscow again.
Sounds like I am selling it again. But the truth is it's the customer satisfaction. Scouts Honour! 😇
