Often arguments are made that Solo trips are all about travelling alone, surviving on your own, discovering yourself but a lot of it is misunderstood. Solo trip is not just about keeping it yourself, It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone, getting away from the familiar environment, familiar faces and embracing the unknown.
Solo trips are not just about discovering places, beautiful landscapes or discovering yourself, it’s about discovering people too. Humans are the most interesting thing you can explore on this planet. Each person is unique in his/her own way and has to offer something. At the core, we all may be the same but we all see life from different dimensions. What may look like just a tree to me, it could be a source of life from someone else ‘perspective. A difference in perspective is worth discovering on a Solo trip.
If you are not sold to the above argument, lets cut the crap, you need someone to take your pics.😂 I see a lot of people asking other people about their trips and expressing their desires to join them on various platforms, Facebook is one of them but they are knocking at the wrong door. In my experience, these 5 social platforms work pretty well if you are going on a solo trip and wish to meet interesting people.
just to show it works |
1. Tinder: Its one of the most interesting platform to meet people. You need to have a premium membership of the app. It costs around Rs 120 (2 $) for a monthly subscription. The premium users get a Passport feature which means you can change your location to any place in the world. Sitting in New Delhi, You can swipe on girls of Moscow. You may say that you don’t get a match. Here is a tip which can solve your problem. Don’t use this app with a mindset of dating and getting laid. You need to do some changes in your bio and profile pics. Your Bio should talk about when and where are you travelling. What are you expecting and a little bit about yourself in one or two lines? Use decent pics, approach with curiosity. Avoid flirting, you can do that once you are sure that the other person will receive it well. Don’t talk too much about yourself or ask too many questions. I met 4 girls in Moscow using Tinder and It saved a lot of money on transportation, food sightseeing etc.
2. Pipingo – Pipingo is another platform where travellers going in the same destination can meet and hang out together. It’s a little costly but works. I used this too during my solo trip to Russia and Kazakhstan. It costs around Rs 1500 (20 $). It’s a website. It doesn’t have a mobile application. In this people post about when and where they are travelling so you can look up to people who are travelling towards the same destination as yours. Keep it as a last option as its little costly.
3. Travello – Travello is a mobile application. As the name suggests it’s a travel app where you can post pictures and videos of your travel adventures. It has a meetup option where you can create an event and tell others that you will be travelling to let’s say Arbat street in Moscow and if others are interested they can join too. It’s a free app. No subscription required. It has good engagement so you will not be disappointed. Just invest a little time before you travel and connect with people.
4. Couchsurfing: It needs no introduction as it has taken the travel industry by storm. Still, if you are new to this, It’s a platform where you can either host travellers or be a guest to others. Suppose you are visiting Moscow, you can look up for hosts in Moscow who are offering their place to stay. There are events, group activities, city tours organized by locals and other travellers. For some, you may have to pay and some are free. It’s a great platform to meet new people when you are travelling.
5. Happn: Last in my list is Happn. Although it comes with a premium subscription, you don’t need it. In this platform, you cannot interact with people beforehand. Once you reach your destination, it will show you a list of people who have crossed path with you. If you get a mutual like, your day is set. I got a few matches but I was occupied with my Tinder matches so didn’t get time to meet girls matched on Happn.
To conclude, there are plenty of other travel apps to explore. Don’t just keep the fun and thrill to yourself. Meet amazing people wherever you go. Share your stories with them, listen to their stories and be part of other stories.
